Housing markets in the United States differ far more between states than most national figures suggest. Property taxes, insurance costs and the pace of new construction are set locally, and two homes with the same price tag can carry annual costs that differ by several thousand dollars.

That is why the same question rarely has the same answer twice. What counts as a starter home in one state buys a very different property in another, and the share of a monthly payment that goes to taxes and insurance varies just as much as the mortgage itself.
